ELIGIBILITY
This competition is open to clarinetists, ages 14-22, in two divisions: high school and college. Application instructions are listed below for eligible clarinetists desiring to submit an application package to be considered for the competition finals on April 5, 2020 at the University of Maryland. A previous winner may not apply until three years have passed from the competition date.
APPLICATION PACKAGE: 3 components for final competition selection
All 3 components listed below must be emailed to the competition coordinator, Alexandra (Sandra) Chappell at: [email protected] by the deadline date.
APPLICATION PACKAGE DEADLINE: Sunday, March 1, 2020, 11:59 p.m. EST.
Submissions received after that date will not be considered.
1) Online Application
Download and complete the application above with required signatures. Please indicate your age, and the name, city, and state of the high school or college that you attend. Both the private teacher (or band/orchestra teacher) and the contestant are asked to attest via signature that the recording is the playing of the contestant and has not been edited, and that the contestant is between the ages of 14 and 22. Edited or altered recordings will not be accepted, including those with reverberation added. Sign, scan, and email your application to the competition coordinator as listed above.
2) Application Fee - $25.00 (USD). Please use the PayPal button above to submit your application fee. The fee is non-refundable. Please email a copy of your paid fee to the competition coordinator as listed above.
3) Required Solo Repertoire to be recorded on YouTube
High School Division: Sonata, op.41 by Miklos Rozsa (unaccompanied)
College Division: Theme and Variations by Gioachino Rossini
The audition music may be either accompanied or unaccompanied for the video recording preliminary round. However, if the required piece was written for clarinet and piano, it will be performed by finalists with an accompanist for the competition on April 5, 2010. It is highly recommended for local finalists to use their own accompanist as the university accompanist is available for out-of-state finalists. Upload your unedited video of the required audition music listed above on to YouTube by the application package deadline of Sunday, March 1, 2020, 11:59 p.m. EST and email to [email protected] along with the application form.
Judging
All judges for the Sidney Forrest Clarinet Competition judging events are professional clarinetists with performance expertise as orchestral musicians, military band musicians, soloists, chamber musicians, and recording artists, who hold college degrees and who are experienced teachers.
The video audition will be judged by a committee during the week following the application deadline. Applicants will be notified as to whether they have been selected as a finalist or not by March 8, 2020.
The selected finalists will be judged at the competition on April 5, 2020 at the University of Maryland Clarinet Symposium by a committee of three guest judges.
